Book Review | Dracula by Bram Stoker
1897 saw the Gothic horror novel of Dracula produced by Abraham Stoker, an Irish author. The story can be seen anywhere, just google it and it will appear. Dracula really cemented what the concept of 'vampires' and the vampire fantasy is and I feel everyone knows Dracula without even reading it.
It is a classic novel, in the literary canon, and is 408 pages long. I like reading classics and try my best to read as many as I can, to see if I believe they should be in the canon or not, and so Dracula was no exception.
Unfortunately, I did not finish Dracula. I put the book down between pages 150-200 as I felt the plot was really disappointing. The plot does not thicken in anyway, there are no unexpected twists or turns, every character is exactly how you imagine and remain that way. Jonathan Harker is not heard from after the first 100 pages, who did really interest me and I was thus peeved that he did not resume his diary entries further down the novel. You hear the most from Lucy and Mina, who I personally was not interested in. You also hear from others but the plot did not stand out to me in any way.
Lucy dies pretty soon in the story, and you are aware Dracula is the one causing her death and suffering, however there is no further detail, a lack of suspense and Stoker does not seem to want to give Dracula any page time in a personal narrative or any appearance, really. Stoker also uses language of the time which is off putting if you're not used to classics and makes you have disruption to your reading flow as you try to understand the word.
I was disappointed by the book and did not want to dump it half way through, but my mum always says, life is too short to read boring books.
I rated it 2 stars on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/61356939-emilia
